Acer Buergerianum (Trident Maple) in NZ
Trident Maples tolerate wind, dry periods, and challenging conditions better than many other small-leaved maples, making them a reliable choice for New Zealand gardens. They perform well in full sun with well-drained soil and adapt to a wide range of environments, from urban streets to smaller home landscapes
With their tidy shape, manageable size, and year-round appeal, Trident Maples (Acer Buergerianum) work beautifully as feature trees, driveway accents, or compact shade options. They’re also highly valued in bonsai for their fine branching and characterful bark.
Acer Buergerianum size, spacing, and growth rate
Trident Maples typically reach around 6m tall × 4m wide within 10 years, forming a compact, rounded canopy. They have a moderate growth rate and should be given space to develop their natural shape. Plant away from buildings or driveways where a full spread is desired.
